When you are given a corundum that is dyed, let's say red, what would you call the tested gem in your grading report? A natural ruby (corundum) and note the treatment on the comments? |

It depends on what is the original colour of the corundum. If it is a ruby, then I will state Identification: Natural Ruby, Corundum Variety. Treatment: Evidence of a foreign red colouring agent. I will try to be as specific as possible. Lab reports that are loose with reporting is as good as waste paper to me. Edited by aloysiushan on 03-03-2009 18:22 |

Agree. They are useless! Even a highly reputed laboratory can make "mistakes". But many consumers depend on them a lot. What would you say if it is from a white corrundum - Discolouring can be seen? Edited by agianto on 03-03-2009 20:42 |

If it is white corundum, I'd call it sapphire. Natural white sapphire, corundum variety. Evidence of a foreign red colouring agent found in fissures. Discolouring is observed. From my experience, these labs make these "mistakes" intentionally. They have cosy relationships with the local traders and mutually support each other. |
